City Council: Members to discuss police equipment disposal, Arts/WEST re-bid

At its Monday night meeting, Athens City Council will discuss re-bidding the ARTS/West building due to renovations. The building was renovated recently to make it more accessible to people with handicaps.

ARTS/West is controlled by the Athens Art, Parks and Recreation Department. According to its website, its mission is to “make facilities, resources and opportunities available to art organizations, individual artists, and community residents.”

“It was bid out earlier this year, and it must have been that bid came in at over 10 percent more than the allowable cost,” Athens City Council •President Chris Knisley said. “So that’s when we have to send it out to re-bid again.”

Council members will also discuss appropriations, staffing and non-union benefits for 2018, as well as appropriations and transfers from 2017.

Union contracts are negotiated every 3 years. Council examines both union and non-union benefits for city employees, Knisely said.

Council will hear an update from the Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Program about the Community Housing Impact and Preservation program. That program provides grants to communities for housing-related activities, such as infrastructure improvements and improving the •housing stock.

Members will also discuss the Athens Municipal Arts Commission’s Stimson Avenue mural project and the traffic box wraps project. They will discuss a 2018-2020 contract for the Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau and a 2018 contract for the Athens Economic Development Council.

Council members will examine how the Athens Police Department disposes of outdated equipment, which can include firearms, vehicles and other equipment.
