At Athens City Council’s Monday night meeting, city council members will discuss an ordinance that would authorize Mayor Steve Patterson to enter a Solar Power Purchase agreement.
The ordinance concerns the solar panels at the community center, Councilwoman Chris Fahl, D-4th Ward, said at council’s Nov. 20 meeting.
Council members will also discuss a motion to approve the Stimson Avenue mural project. The mural that is currently there is over 17 years old, according to a previous Post report. The mural will be white-washed in order for it to be painted over.
The new mural will depict the release of white doves and will be painted by Athens-based artist Keith Wilde on Athens Beautification Day on April 22, 2018.
“These are great ways for artists to contribute to our community,” Wilde said in the previous Post report. “I’m really proud to be a part of that.”
City council will also discuss an ordinance that would provide financial support for the Athens County Economic Development Council.
The Athens County Economic Development Council is a public-private partnership that aims to decrease poverty in Athens County. The economic council looks to retain and expand businesses in Athens in order to provide jobs that pay above their cited livable wage, which is $15 per hour, according to The Athens County Economic Development Council’s website.
The economic council is looking to attract new businesses to Athens County by making land more attractive to business owners.
“A significant proportion of our jobs in Athens are below a livable wage, and that’s something that we identified early on in the strategic planning process that we really wanted to focus on,” Sara Marrs-Maxfield, executive director of the Athens County Economic Development Council, said at the Nov. 20 council meeting.
