During the first Athens City Council meeting of 2018 on Tuesday, two new city council members were sworn into office.
Samuel Emerson Crowl, Ohio University’s sustainability project coordinator, ran unopposed as a Democrat for Athens City Council’s third ward seat, replacing Michele Papai. Papai served on Athens City Council from January 2012 until December 2017.
“He has a really good voice and will bring a lot of good insight to a lot of the sustainability and green energy efforts we’re taking in Athens,” John Haseley, chair of the Athens County Democratic Party, said in a previous Post report. “I think he’ll approach every issue with a thoughtful, common-sense approach.”
Sarah Grace, D-At Large, was also sworn into Athens City Council. She and incumbents Pat McGee, I-At Large, and Peter Kotses, D-At Large, were elected to Athens City Council’s At-Large positions during the November election.
“Sarah is one of the smartest people I've ever met, and that really comes through with how prepared she is to discuss public policy,” Nathan Cotton, Grace’s former campaign manager, said in a previous Post report. “Whatever the issue, she will become an expert and understand ramifications very intuitively.”
Council members also approved the appointments of a number of members to the Municipal Arts Commission, the Board of Zoning Appeals and the Disabilities Commission.
