It's almost Galentine's Day, so celebrate in true Leslie Knope fashion with these tips. (photo via screenshot at giphy.com)

7 ways to celebrate Galentine's Day in style

A special holiday that first made its appearance in NBC’s Parks and Recreation is approaching, and it’s important to find some fun activities to do with friends.

Galentine’s Day is an annual celebration on Feb. 13, the day before Valentine’s Day, during which “lady friends” get together and celebrate their friendship. As Leslie Knope describes it, it’s the day of “ladies celebrating ladies, like Lilith Fair minus the angst.”

Leslie Knope says it should be a national holiday, so it’s important to celebrate it right. Here are some activities the ladies in each others’ lives can do together to celebrate their friendship.

1. Get breakfast at your favorite diner

Do Galentine’s Day the Leslie Knope way with her favorite meal of the day. Leslie and her friends “kick it breakfast-style” by going to JJ’s Diner for breakfast. Take the morning off and go grab some pancakes at Union Street Diner, 70 W. Union St., or Court Street Diner, 18 N. Court St., with the pals. With the holiday being on Tuesday, it would be an early but well-deserved break in the week.

2. Have a movie or TV show marathon

Maybe if the day is too jam-packed to spend time with friends, invite them over for a movie night. Share a bottle of wine or a tub of ice cream and hunker down to watch some classics. A night of Gilmore Girls, Princess Bride or Chopped would be a great way to spend Galentine’s Day with your best friends. Better yet, binge watching Parks and Recreation for the fifth time with the gang could be a great time.

3. Go to a wine bar and play games

A night of wine and Monopoly at a bar like Athens Uncorked, 14 Station St., may be the perfect activity to catch up with friends and beat them at board games. If you’re underage, go to a coffee shop instead and drink some java. Don’t forget to add dessert to the to-do list as well. Nothing sounds more like friendship than lovingly destroying them at Settlers of Catan while eating cake.

4. Host a potluck

Stay in for the night and invite all your galentines to bring their favorite dishes Tuesday night. Stuffing yourself from an eclectic buffet with your friends sounds like a great way to spend Galentine’s Day with your gal pals.

5. Go on a onesie bar crawl

Wear your most comfortable pajamas or a onesie, and paint the town with some friends. Work your way to each of your favorite bars while sporting your most ridiculous jumpsuit. While out, you can even play this Galentine’s Day drinking game from BuzzFeed

6. Go thrift shopping and pick out the best outfits

You and your friends deserve to treat yourselves, but let’s be honest, spending $50 or more on a nice dress can be too unrealistic. Instead of going in debt at your favorite outlet, challenge one other to find cool outfits at a local thrift shop. Sometimes people can find designer brands for 10 times less than the original cost.

7. Make face masks

Pamper each other with homemade face masks. Stay in and treat yourselves to face masks, manicures and a rom com. These nine recipes for different face masks from Reader’s Digest should get you started on easy homemade masks.

No matter what activities the gang chooses to do, make sure to say how much everyone means to one another. Galentine’s Day doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just a simple reminder of much everybody loves each other.
