People pour into Plamer Place while the sun sets over Palmer Place Fest on April 13.

Sunny skies brought a large turnout to Palmer Place Fest

With sunny skies and temperatures peaking in the 80s, the weather was not an issue at Palmer Place Fest. Hundreds of partygoers packed the Palmer Place apartment complex on Friday, despite the cans and bottles that littered the ground.

The party started at about 1 p.m., with DJs and a few eager partiers. By about 4 p.m., half of the courtyard was filled. Within two hours, however, the courtyard was completely filled.

Sean Reardon, a sophomore studying mechanical engineering, was standing on the outskirts of the courtyard.

“Seems a little packed,” Reardon said. “I’m asking my friends where they are. I don’t want to go in and get lost.”

Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle said there were no arrests as of 6 p.m. He said the officers were “waiting.”

“It’s all on private property, so we don’t have a relationship,” Pyle said. “The weather is nice, though.”

Palmer Place Fest drew attention from locals and non-Athenians alike. Steve Toth, from Cleveland, was dressed in a large green sport coat and joked that he had won the Masters Tournament. He stood on top of the bricks and had his wife take a photo of him with Palmer Place behind him.

“I won a golf tournament today, and the crowd came to see me,” Toth said. “We've got to go get my son to his lacrosse game.”

Andrea Kovalchuk, a senior studying public health, carried around a blow-up sex doll with President Donald Trump’s face on it.

“I found it in someone’s apartment I walked in,” Kovalchuk said.

Rodney Cunningham, who works for Cornwell Properties, the company that owns Palmer Place, said he did not have an issue as long as the party was under control.

“As long as they control themselves and people stay intact and calm, they should be fine,” Cunningham said.

Tamy Marsh sat on the porch of Heritage Commons, across the street from Palmer Place, taking photos of the outfits, including one of a man dressed like George of the Jungle.

“I would grab a beer and join the party by keeping everything under control,” Marsh said.

Alan Sarver, a fifth-year senior studying marketing and communication studies, was dressed as George of the Jungle. He said he had three or four pictures taken with him.

“Fest is the only time you can wear a Halloween costume,” Sarver said. “I think I’m wearing the least amount of clothing here.”

At about 8:15 p.m., police pushed partiers out of Palmer Place, and the fest ended.
