Day 11 of football camp: Irons and Long shine in Ohio's first scrimmage of the season

The Bobcats practiced Friday morning for the 11th time during fall camp. It was conducted in a scrimmage outside at Peden Stadium, with over 70 plays over two hours and 20 minutes. It was the first live scrimmage of camp. Here are The Post’s observations:

ATTENDANCE:

Absent: Elijah Ball (season-ending injury), Tyler Tupa (leg), Griffin Hites (leg), Austin Conrad (foot), Zach Burks (undisclosed), Kent Berger (undisclosed), Javon Hagan (non-football illness), Juan Watkins (arm), Kaieem Caesar (undisclosed), Amir Miller (undisclosed).

Limited: Mason Bernhardt (undisclosed), Dante Ruozzo (undisclosed).

Injured: T.J. Robinson (ankle), Jerome Buckner (knee).

Returned: Darfnell Gouin (leg).

Notes:

  • Andrew Meyer, Papi White, A.J. Ouellette and Julian Ross all didn’t participate in the scrimmage. Not because of injury, but there was truly no need. Coach Frank Solich said it wasn’t anything to worry about.
  • Robinson and Buckner were injured within three plays towards the end of practice.
  • Seems like Goin’s injury was short lived. He wore full pads for practice.

OBSERVATIONS:

Sights and Sounds

  • Just one scout in attendance today, one from the New York Jets.
  • Friday marked the last day for Matt Morton, the head of equipment for Bobcat football. He’s worked for Ohio for 13 seasons and operated the largest equipment deal in the Mid-American Conference with Adidas. He was the 2015 Equipment Director of the Year by the Managers On A Mission organization.
  • The scrimmage was live and featured a seven man officiating crew as well as headsets.
  • With the first annual scrimmage of camp came post-practice watermelon. The coaches wives cut up seven for the players. It poured rain for five minutes at the start of practice, but as scrimmage progressed the sun started to come out.
  • Sook Center update: the Ohio Athletic Department officially announced Thursday afternoon its plans for an updated fan experience with the Sook Center. It will include a gift store, new bathrooms, new concession stands, an updated fan pavilion and a beer garden.

Passing game

  • Nathan Rourke and Quinton Maxwell shared the majority of the snaps, while Drew Keszei and Joe Mischler exchanged snaps at with the third team. There were no touchdowns between the passing or rushing game.
  • Rourke was 13 of 18 for 110 yards in one of his lightest passing days of camp. He completed passes to DL Knock (three); Markel Davis, Cam Odom and Maleek Irons (two each); Bryan Long, Jerome Buckner and Noah Hoffman (one each).
  • Rourke found Long for a 10 yard completion. Long was hit hard, but held on to the ball. He shined Friday, finishing with four receptions.
  • The best ball Rourke threw all day was on a seam route, which he hit Hoffman for a 30 yard gain. The running back only had one true run for five yards.
  • Maxwell was 8 of 15, Keszei was 3 of 7 with an interception and Mischler was 1 of 3.
  • Maxwell struggled at times with pressure coming on the pocket, but he had nice passes to Long. One for 18 yards and another for 22 yards.
  • Knock, Long, Ryan Luehrman and K.J. Minter each had drops.

Running backs

  • David Burroughs led all rushers with 65 yards on nine carries, which was in part to his 47 yard run, but he was eventually caught by Tyler Gullett.
  • With Ouellette and Ross sitting out, Maleek Irons had an opportunity to show off what Ohio was missing the past year. He ended up with six carries — all with the first team — for 46 yards. His best run came on his first with a 23-yard pickup, which featured a few broken tackles and the lowering of his shoulder.

After the first scrimmage, here is the running back depth chart:

1. Ouellette

2. Irons

3. Ross

4. Burrough

5. O’Shaan Allison

6. Jake Neatherton

Defensive notes

  • The interception was off of Keszei was grabbed by Keye Thompson at the end of the scrimmage.
  • Jamal Hudson led all with four tackles.
  • The defense forced four tackles; Xavior Motley, Jalen Fox and Tyler Gullett each had a sack. Austin Clack, Bryce Houston and Jeremiah Wood finished the scrimmage with a tackle for loss each.

Special teams

  • The Bobcats went live in every aspect of their special teams today. They started off with a live punt situation, took a break in the middle of the scrimmage for kickoff and at the end of two drives Louie Zervos kicked a field goal.
  • Zervos finished with two made field goals, both from over 30 yards away.

NEXT UP:
