Football: Five fun facts about Howard University

Ohio will open its season Saturday against Howard, and while the Bison football program is in Athens, we at The Post figured it would be a good time to check out what else Howard has to offer.

Here are five fun facts about Howard University:

1. It’s an HBCU

Howard is one of 101 historically black colleges and universities in the United States. It was founded in 1867, just two years after the Civil War ended. A common misperception of Howard is that it is an all-black private school. The university, while private, is open to people of all races. It started as a single-frame building, and now it has an 89-acre campus.

2. It’s located in Washington, D.C.

The nation’s capital is home to many universities, and in the shadows of the hustle and bustle of Capitol Hill, Howard has many undergrad and graduate programs.

3. In 2011, Howard was named the second-best dressed school in America, according to The Huffington Post.

We aren’t sure how good they are at football, and we won’t find out until Saturday. But they know how to dress to impress.

4. The University’s motto is Veritas et Utilitas, or Truth and Service.

Over 200 Howard graduates have served as volunteers in the United States Peace Corps around the world, which is the highest among historically Black colleges.

5. Famous alums

The list of Howard alums is one of the most impressive lists you’ll find. Actor Anthony Anderson from the TV show Blackish, former NFL linebacker Antoine Bethea, Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, Civil Rights and Black Panther party leader Stokely Carmichael, and sports broadcaster Gus Johnson are just a few that call Howard their alma mater. Oh, but lest we not forget Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice and Sean Combs, otherwise known as Puff Daddy and P. Diddy.
