You can now connect smart devices to OU wifi

Maybe now Alexa can answer your homework questions for you.

After years of students asking to connect more wireless devices, Ohio University’s Office of Information Technology delivered.

"With so many new products being wi-fi capable, it makes sense for our network to support those devices," Network Distribution Manager Mike Dixon said in a news release.

Connecting wireless printers, TVs and streaming devices was one of the top feature requests from students, faculty and staff in 2017, according to the news release. The change was effective Aug. 10.

Here’s what you should know about the process:

You can’t use a personal router on the university’s network.

It’ll probably be wonky, and you really shouldn’t try.

You need to follow the university’s guidelines to connect your devices.

If you want to connect your TV, game console, smart speaker, streaming stick or wireless printer, you need to know your MAC Address, and the university has a guide to finding that because every device is different. After you do that, you can use your computer or phone to connect it to the wifi at wireless.ohio.edu. Then, it should be as simple as following the prompts and connecting to the Ohio University Guest wifi.

You can probably connect your device.

The university has a long list of devices that can now connect. Your Nintendo Switch, Amazon Alexa, AppleTV and Xbox all can be used now.

Upperclassmen and alumni are probably very jealous.
