Pipe bomb found in Athens

Athens County Sheriff’s Office discovered a homemade pipe bomb on Wednesday at about 9:30 p.m. 

Deputies responded to an open-door complaint Wednesday at 7320 Radford Road. After arriving to the scene, deputies found what appeared to be bomb-making material, according to the sheriff’s office news release.

Deputies secured the home and obtained a search warrant Thursday. The Franklin County Bomb Squad, State Fire Marshals and the Athens County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search and located a device what resembled a live bomb, which was later found to be a homemade pipe bomb. 

The pipe bomb was take to a secure location and detonated.

“At this time, there are no threats to the surrounding area and the scene has been completely secured. Our investigation is ongoing however, we are asking that if anyone has information pertinent to this case, to please contact the Sheriff’s Office at 740.593.6633,” Sheriff Rodney Smith said in a news release.
