Athens City Council: Members to discuss Halloween weekend and more

Athens City Council will discuss arrangements for Halloween weekend, construction services for the Northwest Bikeway Spur and Richland bridge over Coates Run at Monday night’s meeting.

The Halloween weekend discussion will include preparations regarding the event. A portion of Court Street will be closed due to the anticipation of a large number of people on October 26, 27 and 28. Parking will be banned from Mulberry Street to Carpenter Street.

An ordinance will also be discussed to suspend the enforcement of unnecessary noise for scheduled performances. Members will also suspend enforcement of the regulation of the city parking garage rates.

The Block Party holds a celebrated tradition of taking over Court Street every year. This year’s Halloween performance will be put on by the volunteer work of the Athens Clean and Safe Halloween Committee.

Members will authorize design services for the wastewater treatment plant dewatering project. Phase one of the project will consist of electrical upgrades, plant improvements and updates to instrumentation and controls.

The construction for the Northwest Bikeway Spur project will be authorized. A 10-foot wide paved pathway will be added to the recently extend Hockhocking Adena bikeway. Three intersections with State Route 682 and two major driveways will be eliminated. Construction is set to be complete in September. The project is currently in phase three.

Construction and engineering for the Richland Bridge over Coates Run will also be authorized. The plan includes rehabilitating the bridge with a single reinforced concrete span.

Members will review an ordinance to provide insurance for the purchase of a new pumper truck and related equipment. The cost of the insurance will be $323,411.

The service-safety director will be authorized to enter a contract to lease/purchase smart parking meters. The city is working with IPS Group.
