11 spooky songs for your Halloween playlist

With Halloween a few days away, it’s time to get the costumes, the plans and, most importantly, the playlists finalized. Instead of the usual classics, keep your festivities from the grave this spooky season with these overlooked horror anthems:

“In The Room Where You Sleep” by Dead Man’s Bones

Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields united over a mutual obsession with ghosts and supernatural forces. The duo decided to create a sinister love story that manifested into an album, and suddenly Dead Man’s Bones was born. The entire album is bone-chilling, but this number rightfully earned its spot of relevance this Hallow’s Eve.

“Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell

Feeling a little paranoid?  Although Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” usually dominates every Halloween playlist, he is still featured in the hook of this 1984 track. The background synthesizers generate a creepy feel that will have you turning your head around each corner.

“Girl With One Eye” by Florence + The Machine

In this indie rock tune, Florence Wench channels her gothic aesthetic, threatening to cut someone’s heart out after they made the singer cry. Bring an alternative spook to your playlist with this number that’s riddled with dark imagery.

“Drunk on Halloween” by Wallows

Throw on this post-party track this Halloween for a morning full of acoustics and soothing melodies.

“Highway to Hell” by AC/DC

Although people believed AC/DC to be devil worshipers, the 1979 song is actually about the toil of tour life on the road. Spark up your playlist with this underworld head-banger that comes spiced with Bon Scott’s chilling vocals.

“Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites” by Skrillex

This EDM throwback earns Halloween relevance simply due to its sound that is downright frightful. The sinister dubstep track will have your blood racing during all your Hallo-festivities.

“Witchy Woman” by The Eagles

“Ohhh, ohhh…. witchaaaaay woman.” Get out your pointy hats and plastic cauldrons for this wicked classic rock song. Witchcraft is all about channeling your mystic side. This song delivers just that.

“I Put A Spell on You” by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins

This particular number may evoke nostalgic memories from its major role in Hocus Pocus. It has since been covered by several artists, including Marilyn Manson, Annie Lennox and Nina Simone. However, the sinister noises that Jay Hawkins employs gives the song a level of fright that goes well with a spooky Halloween night.

“Psycho Killer” by Talking Heads

This Oct. 31, celebrate like it’s 1974. Four decades later, the very first Talking Heads hit remains killer. It may have not been originally written as a Halloween song, but the bass line is certainly as crazy and contagiously catchy.

“Disturbia” by Rihanna

“Bum bum be-dum.” Avoid getting DJ anxiety with this disturbingly sultry banger that will have everyone singing along.

“Jump in the Line” by Harry Belafonte

Polish off your playlist in a Beetlejuice-esque way with Harry Belafonte’s classic. Caution: levitation may occur if you shake, shake, shake, Señora.
