Student Senate: Members will vote to endorse Issue 1

At the Student Senate meeting Wednesday, members will vote to endorse Ohio Issue 1.

Ohio Issue 1 would reclassify both fourth and fifth level felony drug charges as misdemeanors and will also reduce the percentage of Ohioans incarcerated for drug charges.

The bill also aims to relocate funds to help with recovery and to prioritize community health and safety rather than incarceration. It will also help to reward those who are in treatment programs for recovery.

This proposed amendment already has 730,000 signatures, the second highest total of any proposed amendment in Ohio’s history, according to the agenda.

Alicia Lundy-Morse, Student Senate chief of staff, said if students do have any opinions on the bill that Senate is endorsing that the students can come and voice their opinions during the student speakout at the meeting.

Two resolutions will appoint two new senators to the Student Senate body, and the Ohio University Police Chief Andrew Powers will have a presentation.

If passed, the resolutions will appoint both Sam Carryer as the Senate Appropriations Senators and Brooke Robinson as the Eastern Campus Senator for the duration of the 2018-2019 academic year.

Powers will present about Halloween and campus safety, which will include a discussion with Senate members.
