Texting in Class: Making the best of dining halls

Dining halls: I thought they were amazing.

I mean what more could you need than a salad bar, pizza, breakfast and frozen yogurt all in one place? But trust me, after a while it gets old and you want nothing more than something other than the food from the dining halls. So how can you make dining hall food more interesting?

Every dining hall has a salad bar but each is just a little different. If you’re at Nelson, instead of just getting a plain old salad try and jazz it up a little. Try to make a southwest salad with black beans, corn and some spicy chipotle sauce for the dressing (I also recommend putting banana peppers on top to give it a little zing but that’s just me). You can also make a Greek salad with some black olives and feta cheese. Try different toppings and maybe a new dressing that you’ve never tried before and you just might find a new dining hall favorite.

If you’re not so much of a salad person but might like Mexican food, you could try the taco bar at Shively if you haven’t already. They have a handful of options such as just a plain bowl, soft taco shells, a hard taco salad bowl or chips to make nachos. They have just about anything you could want on a taco, from meat to cheese and lettuce, and they even have rice if you want to mimic a favorite chipotle order of yours.

Nelson and Shively happen to be somewhat close together but if you haven't ventured over to The District – AKA Boyd – on West Green yet, I would definitely give it a try. Over here they have a pretty good selection of meat from the ‘Carver’s Cut’ section, they have anywhere from steak to rosemary chicken. West green also does a make-your-own pita sandwich and they have all kinds of fillings. I haven't tried it myself but I’ve heard good things.

All of the dining halls have something different to offer that stands out to everyone, I would say that out of the three options for dining halls that West Green is the healthiest so if you’re looking to try and eat better I would say that it’s the place for you. There’s also a healthy smoothie place inside of the market in West Green that is so worth a try. Shively stands out because instead of frozen yogurt they have Velvet ice cream which can sometimes be a trap because it’s hard to say no to ice cream when they have rocky road and mocha chip.

Nelson has just about everything and in my opinion has the best salad bar of the three dining halls so if you want to try out a new salad recipe I would go to Nelson. They also have all day breakfast and I don’t think that there’s ever been a bad time to get breakfast.
