County Commissioners discuss utilities increases, SNAP benefits

The Athens County Board of County Commissioners met Tuesday to discuss a price increase for sewage and water in The Plains.

Rich Kasler of the Athens County Water and Sewer District, said the price for water and sewage will each increase by around 5 percent effective Feb. 1, which will average about $3 increase per person. The increase will pay for needed renovations within the plant. The board voted yes to the increase.

The prices for water in the City of Athens increased eight percent last year, Kasler said.

The board voted to allow the Athens County Department of Job and Family Services to accept cash donations from their website because of some of the potential problems with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program due to the government shutdown.

Nationally, there are still no plans set up for the March disbursement.

Executive Director at Athens County Department of Job and Family Services Jean Demosky also announced the date of a “Back to School Bash” to collect school supplies, which will be held on August 2, 2019. The place is to be announced, but they are looking into the mall as their location.
