Athens County Board of County Commissioners held off on motion to approve land

Athens County Board of County Commissioners held off a motion to approve use of land for an archery range by Capstone Properties.

Since the hillside of the land is owned by the commissioners, or the state, Capstone Properties President David Funk asked for permission to upgrade the entrance for Capstone Crossing, a shopping center with stores such as PA’s Sure Stop, Fruth Pharmacy, Hair Studio 1 and Bargain Billy’s. The center is located one mile southwest of Athens on U.S. Rt. 50/Ohio Rt. 32.

“It’s basically unmaintained,” Funk said. “We’d love to step in and maintain it, landscape it well. We just need commissioner approval.”

Capstone Crossing, previously known as United Lane Shopping Center, will have Athens Outdoors with archery, hunting, fishing, ecotourism in the area where Bargain Billy’s grocery store is.

Funk called the hillside “phantom land” but said that it still has great access and parking with an area of 12,000 square feet, which can also be expanded.

“This is the site that meets all the needs plus the ability to expand,” Funk said.

The commissioners held off on the motion to approve until they could figure out a better way to obtain the land.
