Football: A look at the last three games against Buffalo

Ohio begins its quest for a Mid-American Conference title this weekend when it travels to Buffalo for a MAC East Division game. The Post will take a look at the last three times the two teams have met.

2018

In what was one of the most highly anticipated games of the conference schedule last year, the game quickly turned into a drubbing in the Bobcats favor. Ohio, who was fresh off a loss to rival Miami, rebounded quickly in a 52-17 final over the eventual MAC runners-up.

The Bobcats totaled nearly 650 yards of total offense behind former running back A.J. Ouellette’s 196 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Nathan Rourke performed well, too, with and went 17-for-26 with 209 passing yards and three touchdowns.

The defense held when one of the conference’s most high-powered offenses in check with only 277 total yards. The Bobcats forced five turnovers, four of which belonged to former All-MAC quarterback Tyree Jackson.

2017

Ohio closed out the season on the road at Buffalo, and despite its best efforts, the regular season ended on a sour 31-24 loss.

The Bobcats haven’t won at Buffalo since 2009, where they escaped with a 27-24 score. In the 2017 game, Jackson and Anthony Johnson were Buffalo’s stars. Jackson went 19-for-30 with 294 passing yards and two touchdowns. Both touchdowns were caught by Johnson, who totaled 155 yards on the night.

The Bulls’ defense also had a scoop-and-score in the first quarter that helped them build a 24-7 lead at the end of the quarter.

Rourke recorded three touchdowns — one in the air and two on the ground — in the loss.

2016

Behind former quarterback Quinton Maxwell’s 13-for-23, 236 yard and two touchdown passing performance, the Bobcats thoroughly handled visiting Buffalo in a 34-10 victory.

Maxwell, who had completions with six different receivers, also had nine rushes for 50 yards and a touchdown.

Despite Buffalo out-gaining Ohio by a slim 413 to 392 total yards, the Bobcats defense had six sacks and an interception that limited the Bulls scoring opportunities.

Buffalo’s only points came from a 75-yard pass-and-catch from Jackson to Mason Schreck and kicker Adam Mitcheson’s 22-yard field goal. Mitcheson went 1-for-3 on the night and missed from 38 and 20 yards.
