Weekender Briefs: What’s happening this week

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of events have been canceled or rescheduled. However, some organizations and Athens groups are adapting to the Ohio stay-at-home order and hosting events online through virtual services, like Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Some organizations are opening back up but with preventive measures. Here’s a list of some events still happening this week:

Friday, June 19

Disco Night LIVE from Quarantine with DJ Barticus + George Brazil at 9 p.m., hosted by WOUB Public Media, DJ Barticus and George Brazil. Join these DJs as they spin some great tracks until 2 a.m. You can stream the event through Twitch.tv or on Instagram @bartykutz.

Trolls World Tour at 2:30 p.m., hosted by Twin City Opera House, 15 W. Main St., McConnelsville. Take a drive and see Trolls World Tour on the big screen.

TPott’s Table Talk — African American and LGBTQ+ Experiences at 2 p.m., hosted by Ohio University LGBT Center. Join a student staff member, TPott Potter, for a virtual intergenerational panel to talk about black LGBTQ+ experiences and identities.

Poster Making and Conversation at 1 p.m., hosted by Southeastern Ohio Rainbow Alliance. Join SEORA for a day of sign-making, poster-making and conversation to prepare for the Athens Pridefest rally and march. SEORA will provide some materials, but bring extra to share.

Saturday, June 20

Athens Pridefest Rally and March at 2 p.m., hosted by Southeastern Ohio Rainbow Alliance. Join SEORA for a rally and a march in solidarity with queer lives, people of color and queer lives of color. They will gather on College Green, and after a mini-rally, march to the courthouse via College Street, where another rally will take place. Bring water and wear masks.

Kyle Rutter Fundraiser at 1 p.m., hosted by Kona Ice of Athens, Ohio. Cool off with a snow cone at The Market on State and help raise money for Kyle Rutter and his family. Rutter was diagnosed with ewing’s sarcoma. The funds raised go to his treatments.

DMTK at West End Distillery at 1 p.m., hosted by Dr. May’s Thai Kitchen and West End Distillery. Stop at West End Distillery, 237 W. State St., and enjoy some Dr. May’s Thai Kitchen from its food truck while supplies last.

Sunday, June 21

Yoga in the Park at 11 a.m., hosted by Athens Yoga, 77 1/2 E. State St. Practice your socially distant downward dog with yoga in the park. The class will concentrate on strength building, flexibility and endurance. Pre-registration is required, and instructors will not provide yoga mats. Masks are not required.

Reigniting the Fire of Pride at 11 a.m., hosted by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Join an interactive Zoom service with delfin bautista. They will explore the history and the spiritual dimensions of pride.

Monday, June 22

Silver Linings Moments at 10 a.m., hosted by ARTS/West and the Athens poet laureate. Join Wendy McVicker for a weekly reading of a poem of her choice that she hopes will bring joy and comfort to listeners in this unclear time. People can tune in through Facebook.

Tuesday, June 23

Power Flow Yoga Online with Liz at 5:30 p.m., hosted by Bodhi Tree Guesthouse & Studio, 8950 Lavelle Road. Join in on an online Zoom class, which is designed to strengthen mobility in the body and mind as well as a general feeling of peace. Use the ticket link on Facebook to register.

Mathews Insurance Summer Food Truck Series at 11 a.m., hosted by Mathews Insurance Inc. Celebrate Mathews Insurance’s 75th anniversary by enjoying food from Hot Diggity Dog Unlimited food truck. Mathews Insurance will cover the first $8 of your order. The parking lot will be marked according to social distancing guidelines.

2020 Peanut Butter & Jelly Project at 11 a.m., hosted by Athens County Children Services. The 13th annual project is committed to distributing bread, produce and other products. Donate at any of the following locations: Alexander Elementary, The Plains Elementary, Trimble Elementary, Nelsonville Park, Amesville Elementary, Coolville Public Library. Financial donations can also be made online.
