High School Football: Athens prepares for first playoff game against Western Brown

Athens has made it to the playoffs. The question is if it will stay longer than a week.

During the Bulldogs’ last game against Nelsonville-York, quarterback Joey Moore was pulled from the game in the second quarter due to a left shoulder injury. While Landon Wheatley did his best to fill Moore’s shoes, the Bulldogs were outmatched. They were already down two touchdowns.

It is unlikely that Moore is going to return in time for Friday’s playoff game against Western Brown. For the time being, Wheatley has been forced to shift his focus from starting receiver to starting quarterback.

While Athens is missing its best player, the best it can do is rely on the remaining strength of its offensive core and hope Wheatley adjusts quickly and effectively.

Game information:

Opponent: Western Brown

Venue: Kibler Stadium, Mount Orab, Ohio

Kickoff: 7:00 p.m.

Notes:

  • This is the first time the Bulldogs and Broncos have faced each other
  • Western Brown has a record of 4-2 this season, its first winning record since the 2015-16 season
