Ohio’s guard Erica Johnson (No. 4) takes a shot against Liberty in a game held at The Convo on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020.

Women's Basketball: Ohio chosen as 'team of the week' by NCAA

Ohio women’s basketball is finally getting national exposure.

After going 2-0 last week against Liberty and previously ranked Notre Dame, Ohio was selected by the NCAA to be the team of the week Tuesday.

The Bobcats looked like two different squads Wednesday and Friday, respectively.

Against Liberty, the Bobcats had to shake off some rust and grind out a tough 76-72 win over the Flames. Erica Johnson led all scorers with 31 points, eight rebounds and two assists. It was a great to see Johnson in midseason form against Liberty, but Ohio was going to need a much better team performance to beat Notre Dame.

Behind a 32-point performance for CeCe Hooks, the Bobcats defeated Notre Dame 86-85 Friday to secure the second win over a ranked opponent in school history. Hooks stole the show, but so did breakout performances off the bench from Peyton Guice, Jasmine Hale and Madi Mace.

Ohio (2-0, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) starts conference play Saturday at Kent State. The Bobcats lost to the Golden Flashes last season, but Hooks believes the Bobcats are a team on the rise.

“We might be little, but we’re scrappy,” Hooks said.
