10 songs to add to your fall workout playlist

As the temperature drops and the trees begin to shed their colorful coats, it can sometimes be difficult to find the motivation to take a trip to the gym. Even just going for a jog becomes a challenge as the air turns hostile and begins to nip at your fingers and nose. Without the proper music selection, getting a healthy amount of exercise can seem like a chore, so here are 10 songs that are sure to inspire confidence and fill you with the energy necessary to complete your workout this fall season.

 “Today” by The Smashing Pumpkins

A band with a name such as The Smashing Pumpkins is easily associated with the fall season and this song only strengthens that idea. “Today” is an upbeat song that switches between a loud intense riff and a softer picking pattern when the verse begins. Featuring lyrics such as “Today is the greatest day I’ve ever known,” this song personifies the feeling of waking up with a smile on your face, ready to start your day. Your workout will be joyous while this song is playing, and you won’t be able to stop the smile that creeps across your face as your body is filled with determination and optimism with every note.

Survival Tactics” by Joey Bada$$ x Capital Steez

This song is one of rebellion and arrogance, featuring a fast-paced rhyme scheme and witty lyrics that require a couple of listens to catch. Joey Bada$$ wrote this song with heavy inspiration from fellow rapper MF DOOM, who is also known for his quick-witted rhyming and lyrical rapping style. From Bada$$’s album titled 1999, this song gives a feeling of empowerment and confidence, perfect for a high intensity workout such as boxing or wind sprints. The chaotic nature of this song will surely help you push through the dropping temperatures to make the trek to the gym as winter grows near.

Zombie” by The Cranberries

Another band with a name reminiscent of the fall season is The Cranberries, who released its hit song “Zombie” in 1994. This song is about the struggles of the Irish War of Independence and the effect it had on Ireland's people, specifically two Irish citizens who were murdered in the Warrington Bombings, a year prior to the release of “Zombie.” The pain of a nation fed up with violence can be felt through the almost angry down strumming riff of this song, as the lead singer's intense vocals give listeners goosebumps while you push your body to its limits.

Survival of the Fittest” by Mobb Deep

Released in 1995, this song by rap duo Mobb Deep embodies the danger that one would feel living the gangster lifestyle in Queensbridge, NY, where the group is from. The baseline alone is enough to carry you through your workout and the hot-blooded lyrics make the listener feel untouchable. Turn this song on, throw your hood up and jam your hands in your pockets as you brave the cold. By the time you get to the gym, this song will have you in the mood to obliterate whatever workout routine you set out to complete.

Sound of Madness” by Shinedown

Shinedown is an American rock band hailing from Jacksonville, FL, known for having impressively powerful vocals. This song is no exception and fills the listener with a sizable amount of adrenaline, giving off a feeling of domination. This kind of song is perfect to grit your teeth and lift weights to, with a killer guitar solo towards the middle that will most definitely push you to do one more rep. With the end of the semester growing near, everybody starts feeling the madness, and this song embodies that feeling of chaos, making it perfect for this fall season.

Apple Tree” by Wolfmother

“Apple Tree” is the 5th track on Wolfmother’s first, self titled album. Wolfmother is an Australian rock band, giving them a different sound than we may be accustomed to. This is especially evident in the whiney, exaggerated way the lyrics are sung. This stop and go tune is full of punchy guitar lines, making it impossible not to jump around and bang your head to. No matter what workout you have ahead of you, the sporadic nature of this song is sure to pump you full of energy to knock it out.

Potato Salad” by Tyler the Creator x A$AP Rocky

This groove doesn’t follow the trend of intensity that is evident in a majority of the song on this playlist. Written by Tyler the Creator and A$AP Rocky, who are good friends, the energy present in this tune can be described as rather goofy, for lack of a better term. Over top of a melodic beat, this song features humorous lyrics that are delivered in such a way that make it hard not to crack a smile. This song will easily distract you from being able to see your own breath in the cool, crisp air as you take a morning jog, although you may end up throwing in some dance moves every other step by accident.

Bleed it Out” by Linkin Park

“Bleed it Out'' is the 4th track on Lincoln Park's 3rd studio album. Featuring hard hitting lyrics “I bleed it out, Digging deeper just to throw it away,” over top a ringing guitar riff, this song will have you ready to sweat it out instead. While the chorus is delivered in an almost screamo tone, the verse is composed of a hip-hop like rap sequence giving this song a unique sound. With a constant snare beat in the background, this track is the perfect tempo to match the beating of the drum with the pounding of your feet on pavement as you crunch across fallen, dead leaves.

Sweater Weather” by The Neighbourhood

As we have officially reached sweater weather, this song’s bittersweet feeling is perfect for the chilly fall season. With a constant upbeat tempo, this song builds up to the catchy chorus sung powerfully by lead singer Jesse Rutherford. While the song is really about grabbing the ones closest to you, in this case a romantic interest, and braving the cold world together, we can take it in the literal sense as we attempt to stay warm on the way to the gym and belt out lyrics such as “‘Cause it's too cold, for you here.”

Live Wire” by Mötley Crüe

Mötley Crüe was an American heavy metal band most prevalent in the ‘80s and is widely known for their crazy backstage antics and being the poster child for many bands similar to its kind that were yet to come. “Live Wire” was the band's debut single and is a strong, catchy tune, carried by a fast and striking guitar riff that is sure to give you the urge to thrash your head around. No matter your workout, this song will supply you with energy you need, even as the sun starts to set earlier and we turn our clocks back.
