Athens Basketball: Athens hopes to pull upset in matchup against Meigs

Athens will face its fourth-straight conference opponent Tuesday against Meigs at home. The Marauders are currently second in the Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division standings while the Bulldogs are ranked fifth. As their season draws to a close, the Bulldogs (4-12, 3-5 TVC-Ohio) need another win under their belts if they want to climb any higher in the regular season rankings.

Game information

Opponent: Meigs (9-5, 5-2 TVC-Ohio)

Location: Athens High School

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Notes

The two teams previously met on Dec. 14, 2021, when Meigs defeated Athens 47-32. After a month since its last game against Meigs, Athens has shown few signs of improvement.

The Bulldogs have struggled this season, but they have been the most successful while on their home court. Three of their wins have come while playing at home this season. If the Bulldogs want to pull out an upset win over the Marauders, they will have to lean into their home-court advantage. They are also coming off of their first road win of the season, a 57-46 victory over River Valley, which will bolster their confidence ahead of Tuesday’s game.

Meigs is on a two-game win streak, while Athens has yet to have two consecutive victories all season. Athens will need to play its best game of the season if it wants to keep up with the skills Meigs has consistently shown throughout its schedule.

With just five games remaining in Athens’ regular season, it can only hope to stay afloat and capitalize on its few remaining opportunities to improve its record ahead of the postseason. Its game against Meigs is one of Athens' few remaining opportunities to foster some success before the postseason.
