Football: Armani Rogers and De'Montre Tuggle earn a chance in the NFL

Two former Ohio players will have a shot in the NFL.

Former Ohio quarterback Armani Rogers signed with the Washington Commanders as an undrafted rookie free agent Saturday night. Rogers signed with the team as a tight end. Joining him among the professional ranks will be De’Montre Tuggle, who was invited to the Chicago Bears rookie minicamp as a running back Saturday night, as well.

Rogers was a member of Ohio’s dual quarterback system last season and stood out with his rushing abilities. As a redshirt fifth year, he rushed for seven touchdowns in 12 games. Rogers put his full abilities on display mid-October against Buffalo, where he rushed for 183 yards and two touchdowns after breaking the record for the longest run by a quarterback in Football Bowl Subdivision history.

Rogers was previously a quarterback at UNLV and played for three seasons. In 2017, Rogers was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year after starting nine of the 10 games he played.

Tuggle also spent his redshirt fifth year with the Bobcats and led the team with 791 rushing yards on 133 carries with seven touchdowns. During his time with the Bobcats, Tuggle was named to the 2020 All-MAC Offense Second Team and All-MAC Second Team Specialists.

Tuggle played at Kilgore College before coming to Ohio. Tuggle was a member of the Second Team All-Southwest Conference in his time at the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Eight former Bobcats remain unsigned. However, there is still time for them to receive a free agent contract or an invite to a rookie camp before camps start this season.
