Fun, festive fall activities near Athens

Fall is a magical time of the year. The smell of pumpkin spice, the leaves changing color, the yummy treats and all the spookiness make it a time to remember. Make the most of it this year by keeping track of all the fun happenings this autumn season around Athens.

Pumpkin drinks

Starting off your perfect fall day with a pumpkin drink should be a no-brainer. Beginning Sept. 23, head to Donkey Coffee at the corner of South Congress and East Washington for their famous pumpkin power chai. This drink is available hot or iced with a variety of milk choices, so the perfect drink is available to anyone.

Starbucks is another popular choice with the pumpkin cream cold brew or pumpkin spice latte. Or, check out Court Street Coffee for their pumpkin flavoring all year round and for cozy seating.

Pumpkin patch

A fall bucket list wouldn’t be complete without going to a pumpkin patch. Libby’s Pumpkin Patch is located 20 miles from Athens and includes all of the fall must-haves and pumpkin picking. From activities like hay rides to corn mazes to hiking trails and games, Libby’s has it all. Libby’s will be open at the end of September for all of your pumpkin picking and carving needs.

If that wasn’t enough pumpkins, The Circleville Pumpkin Show is just an hour from Athens and full of all of the best fall vibes. Known as the “Greatest Free Show on Earth,” this event is worth a day trip held on the third Wednesday of October, through the last Saturday in October.

Calling all pumpkin lovers, this agricultural festival features colorful parades, pumpkin exhibitions, entertainment shows and dozens of stands. Make sure you come hungry as the pumpkin spice aroma will make you want to enjoy the fall delicacies this festival has to offer.

Athens asylum

Trying to find activities closer to the campus area? No worries! The Southeast Ohio History Center hosts tours of Athens Asylum grounds and cemetery at The Ridges. Join these walking tours to hear stories about the asylum along with the history of mental health treatment. The tour dates are available online and they offer a member and student discount.

State parks

Athens is known for its beautiful scenery, rolling hills and state parks. There is no more perfect time to explore nature than while the leaves are changing color and the weather is crisp and cool. Strouds Run is located within easy driving distance from Ohio University and features a mix of lake and trail activities.

Also, the peaceful and remote Bur Oak Park features a beautiful array of burnt oranges, vibrant yellows and deep reds this fall season. Burr Oak Park is located just 18 miles north of Athens and is known for its large trail system, kayaking, canoeing, lodge and campground.

Farmers market

The Athens farmers market celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and takes place Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Each week, its vendors provide the freshest and best quality food, plants and artist-made items. This is your go-to stop for the freshest fall apples, sweetest treats or local hand-crafted items.

Movie theater

Fall wouldn’t be complete without a warm and cozy movie night full of snacks and popcorn. The Athena is located right on Court Street and The Athena Grand is located just down State Street. They will feature all of the new Halloween movies being released over the next couple of months along with some throwbacks, so keep an eye out, grab some friends to go with you and enjoy the show.
