Men's Basketball: Get to know A.J. Brown

Freshman A.J. Brown blazed a trail in his first season with the Bobcats. Brown came off the bench for the first time this season in late November and moved to the starting lineup less than a month later.

Brown has contributed 11 or more points in his past seven games and scored a career-high 18 against UC-Clermont on Nov. 30. He has played the most minutes of any freshman, with 190 minutes.

The Post chatted with the Orlando, Florida native about his favorite classes, superheroes and more.

The Post: What’s your favorite movie?

Brown: My favorite movie probably has to be the first Suicide Squad.

TP: OK, who’s your favorite character?

Brown: My favorite character is probably from the second Suicide Squad, the shark (King Shark). I like the shark.

TP: OK, cool. On a scale from 1-10, how would you rate Jared Leto’s joker?

Brown: Well, you know, it’s not like the other one, the (Dark Knight) Returns and that series. It’s not as good as that one, but it’s all right. It’s not bad.

TP: I know a lot of people had a lot to say about Jared Leto’s Joker, so I was wondering what you thought. Do you watch a lot of comic book movies?

Brown: I try to.

TP: Are you more of a Marvel or D.C. fan?

Brown: I think I lean more toward D.C. than Marvel, but I think I watch Marvel more.

TP: What’s your favorite Marvel movie you’ve seen so far?

Brown: It would have to be probably Infinity War.

TP: That one’s a good one. I cried during that one.

Brown: (laughs)

TP: Did you cry during that one?

Brown: I didn’t cry, but I was close.

TP: So you’re from Orlando right?

Brown: Yeah, around there.

TP: I know Universal has some superhero stuff, have you been to any of that or Disney with Marvel?

Brown: I haven’t been to Disney (World), but I’ve been to Universal (Studios), like the Spider-Man ride. I think that’s the only one they have. They also have a Transformers ride, but the Spider-Man ride is the one I remember.

TP: Are you a Spider-Man fan at all?

Brown: I’m a Spider-Man fan, yeah.

TP: Of all the Spider-Men, who do you like as Spider-Man?

Brown: I’d say Tobey Maguire.

TP: Tobey Maguire! I am also a Tobey Maguire Spider-Man person. I am so glad you said that.

Brown: Yeah!

TP: So, we’ve been asking the various AJ(ay)s just what it’s like having so many of you, what is it like having so many AJ(ay)s on the team?

Brown: (Chuckles) It’s fun. We came up with nicknames for everybody. Even though when one person says “AJ(ay)” we all look, but at the end of the day, we have names to distinguish all three of us.

TP: What’s yours?

Brown: Mine is my middle name, Jose.

TP: So does A.J. stand for something space Jose?

Brown: Yeah!

TP: … What’s the first part?

Brown: The first part is Anthony.

TP: All right. So what’s been your favorite part about being at OU so far?

Brown: Probably just the atmosphere and making new friends. I’ve made a lot of new friends, especially on the basketball team, lifelong friends.

TP: What’s your favorite class you’ve taken?

Brown: My sports management class, SASM 1010.

TP: Annie (Valeant) teaches that, she’s a wonderful professor.

Brown: She is.

TP: Are you a sports management major?

Brown: (Smiles) I am.

TP: What’s your dream job in sports?

Brown: That I don’t know yet. I just want to play basketball professionally and see where that takes me.
