Hockey: Ohio falls to Stony Brook in first overtime game this season

Another Ohio winning streak has come to an end.

The Bobcats played from behind all night Saturday, eventually catching up to Stony Brook before the end of regulation. However, they quickly fell 4-3 in overtime. It was the Bobcats’ first time playing overtime this season, and the results were disappointing.

Here are the numbers to know from the game:

27

Ohio didn’t score until the 27th minute Saturday, which is one of the longest amounts of time it has gone without scoring this season. The Bobcats normally waste no time pouncing on their prey and scoring first, but Saturday was different.

Stony Brook’s ability to strike 8:13 into the game kept it from falling behind later, even when Ohio scored back-to-back goals in the third period.

Even when the Bobcats struggle on offense, one player typically steps up. On Saturday, it was Laker Aldridge. He scored all three of Ohio’s goals, including one that was shorthanded with 3:08 remaining to send the game into overtime. Another one of Aldridge’s goals came on the powerplay.

Aldridge is no stranger to making an impact in games. His hat trick may be the most goals he’s scored in a game in his collegiate career, but he tied the Ohio record for most assists in a game this season with six, and his 38 points this season are the second most on the team.

If anyone isn’t a fan of games extending past regulation, it’s Ohio. Saturday marked its seventh straight loss in overtime, a streak that started on February 15, 2020. Ohio played in five overtime games last season and lost every one. However, three were lost in shootouts. Stony Brook didn’t let the game go anywhere near a shootout, scoring the winning goal 17 seconds into overtime.

Two overtime losses to Niagara in 2021 kicked off a 1-11 streak to end the season for Ohio. Making the most of regulation and picking itself back up after its loss to Stony Brook will help the Bobcats stay out of a slump.
