The underground roundup: Grant Schaeffer, Corella, Lure Division, the Regrettes

It seems as if every song on the radio is from the same artists and that every Spotify-generated playlist is a combination of the same TikTok songs in a different order. It’s a frustrating cycle for music lovers everywhere. So, let’s take a look at a few lesser-known artists that definitely deserve your listening time.

Grant Schaffer

Summer sounds to find a home in the discography of Grant Schaffer. Some of his songs take an approach that combines hip hop beats and fingerpicked acoustic guitar riffs, such as “Santa Cruz” and “Pineapple”. Others, such as “Easier to Love” let electric guitar take center stage and let the beat take a backseat, creating a song made for sitting on a beach with a fruity drink in hand.

Most recommended track: “Easier to Love”

Corella

British band Corella encapsulates the spirit of indie rock. Despite their first EP only coming out in 2022, the band has been at work for years, with their first single “Waterfall” coming out in 2016. Their music combines several alt-rock and indie influences, creating a thoroughly energized sound. Sometimes that energy is youthful and spirited, such as in songs like “Bloom” or “Come Around”. Other times, it’s a bit darker, as seen in songs like “Blood Drunk”. Nevertheless, though, their songs are full of life, perfect for an upbeat indie break in your typical Spotify rotation.

Most recommended track: “Come Around”

Lure Division

Drenched in reverb, electronic artist Lure Division takes the synth of the ‘80s and fuses it with the indie sounds and the vaporwave genre of the modern era, creating a nostalgic vibe akin to the likes of artists such as Current Joys and Beach House, which the young artist frequently references on his TikTok account. As a result, his music creates a perfect backdrop to a late night, with songs like “Night Alive” and his most recent release “Forever’s End” encapsulating the feeling beautifully.

Most recommended track: Night Alive

The Regrettes

Life in young adulthood and your teenage years isn’t easy. The struggle of relationships, coming to terms with the state of the world, and coming to terms with yourself all come bearing down on you at once. The Regrettes understand this, and aren’t afraid to show it. From sweet love songs like “Pumpkin” and “I Dare You” to angry anthems like “Seashore” and “A Living Human Girl” to songs encapsulating the exhaustion of these times like “Monday”, there truly is something in their discography for everyone and a song for every feeling we experience during these tumultuous years.

Most Recommended Track: "Seashore"
