Weekender Briefs: Dumpling making, country concert and more

Friday, Jan. 27

Celebrate International Chocolate Cake Day by getting a piece of chocolate cake at West 82 or the new Life is Sweet bakery in Baker Center. Each slice will be priced individually. West 82 will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Life Is Sweet will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission: Cake sold by slice

Blackout Booking will present a concert at The Union this Friday. The bands Rent Free, Plastic Lemonade and Launching Chimes will be performing. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Admission: $8 cover

Saturday, Jan. 28

Bird Arena is hosting a Midnight Meltdown ice skating session after the hockey game between Ohio and Illinois. The session runs from 10 p.m. to midnight. No registration is required.

Admission: $5 rental skate fee

The Ohio EA mixer is an electronic music mixer for students from Ohio University, Baldwin Wallace, The Ohio State University and Oberlin College. This is the first annual mixer and will perform a variety of musical styles. There will be two separate concerts at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. in Glidden Recital Hall.

Admission: Free

The Asian American Alliance and United Campus Ministers Center are hosting a Dumpling Making and Community Potluck for the Lunar New Year. The dumpling making will begin at 4 p.m. and the potluck starts at 5 p.m. There will be prizes at the door for people who bring a dish to share or a non-perishable item to donate. The event will be held at the UCM center at 18 College St.

Admission: Free

Donkey Coffee is hosting “God I Hope I Get It”, a cabaret fundraiser supporting The Fund For College Auditions and Vibrancy Theater. Acting and musical theater students will be performing music and stories that reflect their college audition experiences. This event also hopes to promote diversity in collegiate theater programs.

Admission: Free, but donations are welcome

Sunday, Jan. 29

Country singer Randy Houser will be performing at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium at 8 p.m. Houser sings popular country songs such as “Runnin’ Out of Moonlight” and “Goodnight Kiss.” There is also a special guest that is to be announced.

Admission: starts at $35

Trombone Day 2023 is being hosted by Ohio University’s School of Music from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be master classes, choir and other types of musical activities. At 4 p.m., there will be a final concert that is open for the public to attend in Glidden Recital Hall. The featured artist for this year is Yu Tamaki Hoso, an international soloist.

Registration: $10

The Athens County Humane Society and Friendly Paws Pet Supplies & Grooming are hosting an adoption event for cats and kittens to be adopted. The event is being held at Friendly Paws Pet Supplies & Grooming on East State Street from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
