Lately with Layne: Honoring all women this Women’s History Month

March 1 marked the beginning of Women’s History Month. Throughout the next few weeks, we should all celebrate the remarkable accomplishments and progress made by women of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Here are, in my personal opinion, some women that deserve some extra recognition this month.

Abbey Romeo, a cast member from “Love on the Spectrum,” can teach us all valuable lessons. Romeo is also famous on TikTok where she posts videos often. In these videos, she reminds her followers how to unpack big feelings and appreciate the small things in life.

Meena Harris, niece of Vice President Kamala Harris, is releasing her book, “A is for Ambitious,” on March 14. This children’s book redefines terms from A-Z that are typically used to undermine women. This is an important lesson for young girls to have in their lives, and Harris should be acknowledged for making it possible.

Dylan Mulvaney, a trans woman, is taking TikTok by storm amidst their series, “Days of Girlhood.” In this, Mulvaney announces how many days she has been a girl and what she is doing that day. Her positive spirit and “you do you” attitude is refreshing and something we could all use a little more of in our lives.

Alex Morgan, midfielder for the USWNT, fought alongside her teammates including Megan Rapinoe to be the team that made equal pay in sports possible. Additionally, she is raising her 2-year-old while continuing to be one of the best in the game. She is the epitome of what young female athletes strive to be when they are 33.

Greta Thunberg is going to be on my list for the rest of my life. At 20 years old, she has taken more action than most politicians and activists. She is persistent in her efforts and is never second-guessed about having ulterior motives like many brands do when promoting their green thumb. Most recently, she was even detained for protesting the expansion of a coal mine that has warming effects on our planet. In photos, she seems happy to be carried away knowing that it will raise more awareness and attention to her cause.

Melissa Viviane Jefferson, famously known as Lizzo, deserves celebration every day. Whether you’re looking for a musician, entrepreneur or just a body-positive personality to brighten your social media feed, Lizzo is your girl. Her upbeat music and inclusive clothing line are sure to satisfy everyone.

Tina Tsakonas, a woman recovering from addiction, deserves recognition for the work she is doing and the people she has helped. She posts multiple videos a day on her TikTok either telling stories, taking her followers with her to do things like cooking dinner or creating scenarios that happen during addiction and recovery. All of this aligns with her goal to recover out loud and show others that it is possible.

With all of this said, the media often forgets to celebrate all women. While I obviously can’t acknowledge each deserving woman, I hope this shows how an intersectional approach to feminism is the best way to celebrate.

Happy Women’s History Month!
