Back-to-school essentials for college students

Unlike the fun of picking out art supplies and a new backpack during your middle and high school days, shopping for back-to-school essentials is much different for college students. You’re finally on your own, and that means you need items that will be worth your money and time throughout the next four years.

With that being said, here’s a list of back-to-school essentials you’ll actually need throughout your four years in Athens:

A computer

Depending on your major, you will need a certain computer to bring to your classes, as well as use for classwork and extracurriculars. At Ohio University, there’s a list of recommendations you can find on their website, or you can check out Bobcat Depot at the beginning of the year to look for the right computer for you. However, you should probably order a computer before you leave for Athens, or right when you get there, to avoid falling behind on assignments. Having a computer that’s high quality, such as a Microsoft or MacBook, will allow you to stay organized, and you’ll probably end up needing it every day. You can also use this for downtime activities as well, such as watching your favorite show on Netflix or Facetiming with long-distance friends.

Headphones

Similar to a computer, you will most likely use a pair of headphones every single day of your college career, even if you’re not the biggest music fan. You may need these for Zoom or Microsoft Teams calls for classes or if you need to watch a video for an assignment. Also, having headphones is great for blocking out noise while you’re working, especially when in group spaces such as Baker Center and Alden Library. Buying a pair of headphones is also ideal if you love listening to something on your walk to class, while you’re studying or when you’re at the gym. Basically, they’re perfect for any occasion, so get yourself a pair before you regret it. Affordable brands can be found on Amazon such as Srhythm or JBL.

A planner

Please get a planner! Whether it’s a physical one or Google Calendar, you need a planning system in college to get you through the week. Without some type of organization, you will easily fall behind and lose track of your assignments and events. By getting a planner, you can put in your classes, assignments, extracurriculars and even birthdays or holidays that you may want to keep note of. You’re an adult now and nobody is going to be holding you accountable for getting your work done, so a planner is essential if you want to succeed in college. Planners can practically be found anywhere from Target to Papier.

Notebooks

In terms of actual school supplies, your best bet is to buy a few notebooks for the semester, as most of your classes will require you to take notes at least in your first few years of college. This is honestly all you need for your classes unless your professors say otherwise, and you can remember what you’ve learned by writing important things down throughout the day. Also, it saves less space and prevents your back from hurting when walking around campus, and you’ll be happy you didn’t overspend on supplies. You can find notebooks anywhere, so just take the time to come in prepared with a few before you leave for school.

A water bottle

Lastly, a water bottle is something you’ll need, especially during the first few hot and muggy weeks in Athens. Sometimes, you may not have time to stop back at your dorm or apartment to grab some water, and it’s important to stay hydrated to avoid dehydration or burnout. So, get yourself a water bottle! They’re easily accessible, can be carried anywhere and can be stored in your backpack to avoid taking up too much room. Make sure to also get a decent-sized bottle, as you need to ensure you have enough water to last you for at least a few hours. Good brands to look into include Yeti or Stanley, with an array of colors and prices for your liking.
