Artist Spotlight: John Roberts stuns beyond the world of voice acting

John Roberts, the two-time Emmy-nominated voice actor, has added musicianship to his long list of talents. Roberts famously voiced Linda Belcher in the animated comedy series “Bob’s Burgers,” and is now an up-and-coming pop artist. His recent single, "Nothin 4 Something," combines '80s synth rock, electro-pop and queer empowerment in one glamorous package.

Roberts has collaborated with many big-name artists, including the '80s style and rock icon Debbie Harry and former Gossip lead singer Beth Ditto, on his 2021 album, "Lights Out." Roberts’ first release of 2023, “Danger," was more mellow than "Nothin 4 Something," but still heavily influenced by the pulsating beats and soaring vocals of '80s electro/synth pop. "Danger" was produced by Junior Sanchez, who is known for his work with Katy Perry and Felix Da Housecat.

Adding to Roberts’ list of collaborations, the music video for "Nothin 4 Something" was directed by Cody Critcheloe of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The video begins in black and white, featuring Roberts working on a car that will eventually take him to the stage door of his concert, where he will perform the remainder of the high-energy single to close out the video.

The video is heavily stylized, featuring a license plate that reads “OVER IT,” as well as a jacket with the words “MAKE ME” adorning the back. Interspersing vintage noir with explosions of color creates a theatrical blend of drama and surrealism.

On his new single, Roberts said, “I wanted to write a song about this a--hole ex-boyfriend of mine who was toxic. It’s an empowerment song. The '80s-inspired guitar solo by Fuzz Sangiovanni is also incredible and Junior Sanchez slayed the production.”

The song’s upbeat tempo and empowering attitude are guaranteed to inspire some rebellious dancing and obsession with the track. Roberts’ sensual vocals contrast against the upbeat electro-pop dance music to create a captivating musical experience.

The song features and ends with a whining guitar solo to drive home the '80s inspiration. It is impossible to experience Roberts’ new single without lots of toe-tapping and head-nodding, encouraging listeners to get up and dance to the anthem.

"Nothin 4 Something"is an unapologetic breakup anthem with incredible glam rock and synth-pop influence. Roberts transcends the bounds of both the animated and musical world with his captivating energy and undeniable charisma that will someday serve as an influence for a new generation of powerful queer artists.
