Hockey: Justin Damon, The heart of Bird

Dad’s Weekend festivities and the spirit of Ohio Hockey led to a full crowd. Bird Ice Arena was packed on Friday for Ohio’s 4-1 win over Syracuse to begin a two-game series. The arena was completely sold out for the first time this season.

Justin Damon, goaltender for The Bobcats was named a star of the game. The senior played for the entirety of the game and saved many of the attempted 36 shots on goal from opponent Syracuse.

Damon shares that the brotherhood of the team carries a large portion of his motivation for the game.

“The love for the boys motivates me, alongside the amount of work we put in every day. Especially since it’s my senior year, it’s fun to take it all in and do the best we can,” Damon said.

Damon did not get to play in the last few games due to being concussed. He shared that he had two weeks to recover and work hard to be ready for the series this weekend.

The Damon family made a trip to Athens for the game and to celebrate Dad's Weekend. Justin Damon’s dad and brother came into town and supported him during the game.

When asked who supports Damon the most from the sidelines, Damon responded: “My parents, brother, grandma and great grandma. They have always been my greatest supporters growing up and they are the reason that I am here now.”

This weekend is the first time that Damon’s brother has been to Ohio University for a visit, so he felt motivated to perform his best and show the leadership skills that he obtained.

Damon is a highly skilled goaltender who guides the team to victory and brings pride to Ohio fans. He filled the stands with excitement with each impressive save.

Coach Lionel Mauron acknowledges the contributions that Damon provides to the team, “Having Damon in the back tonight saved us.”

The Bobcats hope to have a packed Bird again Saturday evening for their second game versus Syracuse.

“Now let's pack The Bird again tomorrow,” Damon said.
