A whole year went by with no updates on the supposed couple, but in an interview with Rolling Stone UK, Charli XCX revealed she had broken up with her long-term boyfriend of seven years.
Detailing the breakup in her song “Every Rule,” she said, “It’s a song about her long-term relationship that recently ended, it’s also quite traumatic to listen back to, this is a relationship from my past that no longer exists. I really love this song because I’m just saying exactly what happened and it feels very truthful.”
On March 18, XCX dropped “CRASH,” further expanding on her journey of self-discovery after going through a breakup. Ironically, Daniel helped produce some of the album, with many fans seeing it as a subtle confirmation of their budding relationship after he posted about it on his personal Instagram.
Songs like “Yuck,” “Good Ones” and “New Shapes (feat. Christine and the Queens and Caroline Polachek)” dived into the singer’s feelings about being trapped in a long-term relationship, and fans could not help but think they were inspired by her personal life.
The following day, Charli XCX performed on “Saturday Night Live,” where Daniel was reportedly in attendance, according to PEOPLE.
Charli XCX took to Instagram to finally confirm her relationship with Daniel after spending a vacation in Capri, Italy together. Posting a video of Daniel and her driving in a Jeep together, the singer smiled and talked to the drummer, seemingly in love.
After working together on “Spinning” and “CRASH,” the duo went back to the studio to release another song, titled “Hot Girl (Bodies Bodies Bodies)” for the A24 film “Bodies Bodies Bodies.” Daniel posted the announcement for the track on his Instagram.
Daniel posted another photo of him with Charli XCX, with the two hugging each other and smiling. He captioned it, “IILWY,” a reference to The 1975’s song, “I’m In Love With You.”
A few months later, the couple posted another photo together on XCX’s Instagram, this time in Paris. Posing together in front of the Eiffel Tower, the singer and drummer smiled at the camera behind its lit-up structure. The two were later seen following the post out at Paris Fashion Week together.
Kicking off the new year strong, the couple collaborated again on a rendition of Caroline Polachek’s “Welcome To My Island.” In an Instagram post, Daniel said, “hi I just wanna say charli is so fit and I fancy her loads and she’s wicked and sick and so hot yeah mate sick. Welcome to my island remix out now thanks for having me!! (Ps charli wrote this but george really crushed this remix).”
Charli XCX revealed more photos on Instagram of her and Daniel after attending The BRIT Awards. While she did not win in her category, the singer still seemed honored and happy to be there, especially with the drummer by her side.
Again, the couple took a trip to Italy, with the singer including select photos of Daniel and her friend group. She may have even foreshadowed their engagement, saying, “don’t you dare steal MY wedding country!”
The couple worked with Sam Smith on the song “In The City,” which Daniel helped produce. The single was released on Oct.19. With lyrics like “I never thought I would find it / But I found what I was looking for,” it was a direct nod to the singer and drummer’s relationship.
Charli XCX broke the news that she was engaged to Daniel, which seemed to have happened during the Thanksgiving holiday. The singer showed off her ring and photos after the big moment happened on Instagram, causing many fans and music critics to share their excitement online.
