Kickin’ with Kyra: Highly-anticipated 2024 films, why they will be successful

2023 introduced many great films, with “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” arriving in July and “Priscilla” and “Saltburn” releasing in October and November, respectively. Last year also gave audiences romantic comedies like “Anyone But You” and action films like “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” 2024 has a hard act to follow, but just a quick glance at the films to come indicates it’s going to be another great year for movies.

In an annual survey by Fandango, “Deadpool 3” seems to be the most anticipated film of 2024, and the film is set to be released July 26. A trailer has yet to be released for the film, but there are already plenty of behind-the-scenes photos. Rumors of fan-favorite “Loki” characters making an appearance in “Deadpool 3” have been swirling, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman reprising his role as Wolverine are enough to send fans running to see this film come July.

“Madame Web,” a fictional character in the Spider-verse, will take over theaters Feb. 14. Dakota Johnson will be portraying Madame Web, and other cast members include Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced and Emma Roberts. In the comics, Madame Web is an elderly guide for Spiderman. The film is an origin story for the character and will serve as a great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the plot centering around a group of powerful women played by popular actresses, this movie is bound to be perfect for a Galentine's Day outing.

The musical thriller “Joker: Folie à Deux” will be released Oct. 4. The film is a sequel to the 2019 film “Joker” and will once again star Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker but with the addition of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. After the success of “Joker,” this sequel has been anticipated since 2022. Myself and other fans are excited to see the portrayal of Harley Quinn and the Joker’s relationship as well as Lady Gaga’s performance in this addition to her acting repertoire.

A biopic about the life of Bob Marley is also set to release Feb. 14. The film is called “Bob Marley: One Love” and will follow the famous reggae musician overcoming the challenges he faced on his journey to fame. The film will star Kingsley Ben-Adir as Bob Marley, who was approved by Ziggy Marley, Bob Marley’s son, to play his father. Not all films about well-loved icons get good reviews — “Blonde” (2022), “Jobs” (2013) and “Stardust” (2020), to name a few — so Ziggy Marley’s approval of Ben-Adir automatically sets this biopic up for higher chances of being well-received.

Cartoons are also making comebacks with their sequels and continuations. “Inside Out 2” is set to release June 14 and a new character named Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, was introduced in the teaser trailer. This sequel has also been long-awaited after the success of the first. Hawke is also a beloved actor after her role in Stranger Things. “Despicable Me 4” is also being released in the summer. Following the suit-wearing trend surrounding “The Rise of Gru” in 2022, the love for this franchise will follow into the fourth installment of this series on its June 3 release.

2024 has a lot of work to do if it wants to outdo 2023 in films, but I am excited to watch movie fans’ thoughts unfold as the year goes on.
