'Stranger Things' prepares to close the Upside Down gate

After nearly a decade of bike rides, fighting demogorgons and experiencing all sorts of love and loss in Hawkins, Indiana, Netflix’s biggest show, “Stranger Things” is finally closing the curtain on the Upside Down.

In 2022, brothers and co-creators of the show, Matt and Ross Duffer, released a joint statement stating the fifth season is the show's last. Now, as we wait for the release of the first four episodes on Nov. 26, here is all that is known about the upcoming season.

In terms of the cast, the original group of Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) and Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) will be returning, as well as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink).

Jim Hopper (David Harbour) and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) are also confirmed to return, along with Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton). Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) and Erica Wheeler (Priah Ferguson), who both joined the cast as main characters in season three, will also be back.

The Duffer brothers have promised season five will bring these storylines together one last time, uniting all the surviving characters for a final showdown in Hawkins.

At the conclusion of season four, the town of Hawkins was left in chaos after Vecna’s, the season’s antagonist, attacks tore open the barrier between the real world and the Upside Down. The closing moments showed the town burning, with cracks spreading through the streets and skies darkening as the two dimensions began to merge. The characters narrowly survived—aside from fan-favorite Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn)—but Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) lived on, leaving the battle far from over.

While specific plot details remain secret, the Duffer brothers have indicated the final season will focus heavily on the emotional core of the story. Earlier seasons of “Stranger Things” balanced friendship and adolescence with monsters and horror, and this last chapter is expected to return to that balance, revisiting the emotional tone that defined the show’s beginnings.

The stakes, however, are higher than ever, as the group faces not only the supernatural forces threatening Hawkins but also the personal struggles that have followed them since childhood.

The origins of the Upside Down are expected to play a major role in season five. Viewers learned the dimension mirrors Hawkins but remains frozen in time on the day Byers was first taken in 1983.

This unanswered mystery will likely be at the center of the final episodes, exploring how the Upside Down came to exist and why it is linked so deeply to Eleven and the experiments at Hawkins Lab. The connection between Vecna, Eleven and Byers continues to unfold, tying together threads that have been building since the show’s release.

Byers, in particular, is expected to have a major emotional arc as his psychic connection to the Upside Down remains one of the show’s most intriguing mysteries.

His sexuality, which has been subtly discussed in past seasons, may also come to the forefront as Byers continues to navigate his feelings, possibly with his long-rumored affection toward best friend Wheeler.

Along with Byers' overall arc, many are also anxiously anticipating what will happen to Max Mayfield after her near-death experience with Vecna. Whether she wakes up or remains trapped in a coma-like state could be one of the season’s most tear-jerking moments.

There’s no shortage of worry for the characters fans have grown to love. Steve Harrington, whose growth from the arrogant teenager to a selfless babysitter/hero has made him a favorite, remains a particular source of concern among viewers, many of whom fear he may not make it to the end.

The release schedule for the last season of “Stranger Things” will differ from past seasons. The first four episodes will arrive on Nov. 26, the next three on Christmas Day and the finale will premiere both in theaters and on streaming services New Year’s Eve.

For many, “Stranger Things” has defined a generation of television, blending 1980s nostalgia with heartfelt storytelling and supernatural terror. The final season promises to bring closure to the beloved characters and the town of Hawkins. Whether good or evil prevails in the end, one thing is certain: “Stranger Things” will go out as one of the most celebrated and revolutionary shows of its generation.
