Week six Student Media Poll picks

Each week, the Sports' editorial team selects its Top 25 FBS college football teams for the Student Media Poll.

The SMP is a nationwide poll featuring 25 student journalists from schools nationwide.

The Post Sports will break down its ballot each week. Here is a breakdown of the top five, those dropped from the Top 25, and those added.

Top 5

1. Ohio State (5-0)

Two words: Jeremiah Smith. The star wide receiver looked like the best offensive player in the country during Ohio State’s 42-3 dismantling of Minnesota on Saturday night. The defense bolstered its rresume as it now averages just five points per game allowed through five games this year. They now look ahead to the biggest matchup since Texas in week one, with a trip to Illinois on the horizon.

2. Miami (FL) (5-0)

Miami went on the road for the first time in 2025 and took down Florida State with its devastating defensive front. The Seminoles had averaged 336 yards on the ground heading into the game, but were limited to just over 100 yards against the Hurricanes. They also turned the Hurricanes over three times, including intercepting Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos twice.

The defense held tight all night but was given a firm lead early behind four touchdown passes from quarterback Carson Beck. This hot streak from Miami will be stirring all week during its bye with hopes to keep it up in two weeks when it hosts a one-loss Louisville team.

3. Oregon (5-0)

After a big trip to Penn State resulting in a massive upset win, the Ducks headed into their bye week. This week in Eugene, Oregon hosts Indiana in what has quickly become one of the biggest games on the Big 10 schedule in 2025. Curt Cignetti and his team are right outside the top five and are looking for the upset to keep their undefeated start to the season alive.

4. Oklahoma (5-0)

No John Mateer, no problem. Oklahoma shut out Kent State in Norman to kick off a stretch of games without its star quarterback, but the offense didn’t seem to lose a step either, winning 44-0. Oklahoma will be tested this week in the Red River Rivalry that has now become a must-win game for Texas, which lost for the second time this year last week and needs the win to keep its season alive.

5. Ole Miss (5-0)

The top five saw no movement after week six. The Rebels sat idle this week after defending home turf to remain among the unbeaten. They come out of the bye with a non-conference game against Washington State as they hope to keep the momentum rolling at the midway point.

Who I Added: 21 BYU, 23 Virginia, 24 USC, 25 Washington

There are four new additions to the top 25 this week. First, BYU, which is one of the two remaining Big 12 teams undefeated after week six. The Cougars started the year by handling all three non-conference games by a combined 114 points. They followed it up with two hard-nosed victories once conference play began, led by quarterback Bear Bachmeier, who has 12 total touchdowns.

Two weeks, two overtime victories for the Cavaliers. After an early-season loss to NC State, Virginia has gone down to the wire two weeks in a row against Florida State and Louisville. The ACC is wide open at the midway point this year, and Virginia looks to be right in the eye of the storm as the 2025 season continues.

After a one-week hiatus from the rankings, USC took advantage of a bye during another chaotic week around the nation. Washington is another team that found week six to be advantageous after a 24-20 comeback win at Maryland that pushed them into the rankings for the first time this year.

Who I Dropped: Penn State, Texas, Florida State and Iowa State

Two losses can be detrimental to a team's playoff hopes in the new 12-team format, but big wins can keep them alive. Unfortunately for both Penn State and Texas, they fell out due to poor résumés and second losses against teams they should have beaten. Penn State fell 42-37 to a winless UCLA team on the road, and Texas lost to a three-loss Florida team in Gainesville by a score of 29-22.

The Seminoles kicked this season off with a bang. These last two weeks have been ugly for them, however, with back-to-back losses. They fell in overtime to Virginia on the road and then backed it up by dropping one in Tallahassee to Miami.

The Cyclones are the odd case. They started the season in Ireland with a win and then went on a roll to start with five straight. The first road game in Big 12 play was a wake-up call though, as Cincinnati just controlled the game from start to finish in a 38-30 loss for Iowa State.
