A couple that can’t stay out of the media: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. On Aug. 19, the couple announced they would be moving back to the U.K. for an extended period of time. Since stepping away from their royal duties, the couple has lived in California since 2020, causing fans to wonder what the change is for.
After the couple arrived in England Aug. 26, there are a lot of ideas circulating as to why the family is moving back. One is about schooling for their children, Archie and Lilibet. The children are enrolled in school in the U.K., indicating the decision has been in the couple’s minds for some time. It also means the family will be in the country for at least a year.
King Charles was informed of the move earlier this month. The king is 77 and his health is declining, so there can be an argument made for trying to become closer to him in his later years.
Harry commented on his relationship with his father in May 2025.
“I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore… life is precious,” Prince Harry told BBC.
Those close to Prince Harry have brought up the fact that he has missed home, specifically his longtime friends, in addition to his family.
The couple originally moved out of the U.K. for familial reasons. Prince Harry and his brother William are not on good terms, marking a big reason for the move. Harry wrote in his book and discussed in an interview that his brother threatened him and was mean to Meghan.
Mark Dolan, host of “The Mark Dolan Show,” has brought his own opinions to this idea and believes there are a few losers in this situation.
“The other loser is most definitely Prince William, who, as we know, is completely at odds with his own brother following the book ‘Spare’ and the awful Oprah interview and the Harry and Meghan documentary,” Dolan said on his show.
He and others believe that moving back to the U.K. will force Prince William back into contact with his brother, which both of them would be very skeptical about.
Dolan goes on to say that Meghan is another loser in this situation since she is moving to a country where nobody likes her and she has no friends or job.
Moving back may put Prince Harry back into the “driver’s seat” of their relationship, with Harry calling the shots. Meghan, being from the U.S., was more able to determine how their lives looked. This may change with the move.
When the couple left initially, they left royalty and the perks. They pay their own bills, live alone and work on their own projects. Upon coming back to the U.K., there are questions about the kind of things they will get back.
Security left when they did, and their safety may be a concern. Many people dislike Harry and Meghan, so questions can be raised about how they are going to protect themselves in this new area.
Meghan is expected to continue her As Ever brand in her new location. Harry is said to be attending engagements for WellChild and other charities he has continued to support.
Despite the bridges the couple has burned along the way, Harry is said to be repairing his relationship with both his father and brother. While it is impossible to know how the family is truly getting along, the move back will either mend the issues or make them worse.
It will take some time for the public to see how well the move works for the entire royal family, but any longtime fan of the monarchy likely hopes the best for the family. Getting security for Harry, Meghan and their children is a highly anticipated question, but fans will have to wait to see.
Hopefully, the family is able to repair much of the damage they have endured and become an even stronger unit.
