Men's Golf: Ohio finishes 12th in Moraine Intercollegiate

Nearing the end of the fall season, the Bobcats travelled to Kettering, Ohio for Miami’s Moraine Intercollegiate at Moraine Country Club where they finished the tournament in 12th at 39 over par.

Ohio opened the tournament strong with their best round at even par to open in third place. Sophomore Rylan Hall shot a career best five under par with an incredible six birdies, one bogey and 11 pars.

He was followed by freshman Jack Marsh at one over par. Marsh gave Ohio a one over front nine where a costly double bogey on the second hole made the difference from a one under front that included three birdies. He turned it around, shooting an even back nine, tacking on two more birdies and five pars.

At two over came sophomore Gabriel Mainella and junior Mikey Schutte. Schutte opened with an even front nine with two birdies, two bogeys and five pars. Similar to Marsh, he had a double bogey that kept him from finishing with an even first round.

Mainella finished both nines one over par with five birdies, seven bogeys and five pars. Rounding out the group was freshman Cole Jones at three over. Jones fed off everyone, giving Ohio a one under front nine that started off with back-to-back bogeys on holes two and three before rolling to a dominant four pars, birdie and an eagle on the seventh hole.

In the second round, the Bobcats struggled to replicate their first round success, falling to +14. Mainella led the way, finishing one under par, highlighted by a one under front nine with three birdies and four pars. He continued that groove into the back nine, finishing even par, scribbling in two more birdies and five more pars.

Hall struggled in the second round, finishing four over par. He started out strong with an even front nine, where he picked up a double bogey and bogey on holes one and two before finishing strong with four pars and three birdies. On the back, he’d pick up three bogeys and a double bogey before ending the round with a birdie on the 18th.

At five over par came Jones, who had a solid front nine with two bogeys, a birdie and six pars before rounding the bend and tacking on four bogeys and five pars. Falling one stroke behind him was Schutte, who struggled on the first three holes with a double bogey and back-to-back bogeys before bouncing back with six consecutive pars. On holes 10-18, he turned it around, shooting two over with three bogeys, a birdie and five pars.

Finally at +8 came Marsh, who finished with the same score on the front but struggled on the back with five bogeys, a birdie and three pars. Sitting in the 10th headed into the final round, the Bobcats couldn’t find the same spark they had in the first round, picking 11 strokes finishing at +25 in the final round to finish in 12th place.

Schutte led Ohio at four over par, highlighted by an even front nine of seven pars, a birdie and bogey before adding four bogeys on the final nine.

Marsh followed closely behind at five over par, where a double bogey on the first hole cost the freshman an even front nine, while on the final nine holes he had four bogeys, a birdie and three pars.

At seven over par came Jones, who shot two over on the back nine with seven pars and two bogeys after picking up four bogeys and a double bogey on the front. Hall finished the final 18 holes with at nine over par. He inished with two triple bogeys, four bogeys, a birdie and eleven pars.

Finally, Mainella rounded it out with an 82 with seven bogeys, a double bogey, a triple bogey, eight pars and a birdie.

Placing the highest for Ohio came Hall tied for 33rd (+8) and tied for eighth in birdies with eleven. Schutte and Mainella followed, tying for 53rd (+12). Marsh tied for 63rd (+14) and Jones tied for 66th (+15).

As a team, Ohio finished tied for ninth in par-5 scoring at three under par, tied for the most birdies at 39 and was one of only eight teams with an eagle.

Ohio will travel to Dayton for their final invitational of the fall season for the Dayton Flyer Invitational on Oct. 19-20.
