Weekender Briefs: Homecoming week, comedy play, live music

Tuesday, Oct. 6

Hosted by THRIVE, the Creative Coping Cafe is open to students in Lindley Hall, Room 052, located at 79 S. Court St., from 11 a.m. to noon. The workshop is designed to help students learn valuable coping strategies and connect with peers. 

Admission: Free

THRIVE is also hosting a “De-stressin’ Session” in Baker University Center, Room 330, located at 1 Park Place, from 2-3 p.m. Students can make their own affirmation mirrors.

Wednesday, Oct. 7

The Ohio University Alumni Association hosts a Homecoming clean-up event at Emeriti Park from 9-11 a.m. Volunteers are encouraged to bring a water bottle and gardening gloves.

Admission: Free

The comedy play, “Real Girls Can’t Win,” opens at 7 p.m. in the Putnam Hall Playspace, located at 96 E. Union St. There will also be a 9 p.m. showtime, and the play will continue its run until Saturday.

Thursday, Oct. 8

The Yell Like Hell Pep Rally will be hosted at Scripps Amphitheater, located at 10 Park Place, in celebration of Homecoming. There will be a photo booth, yard games and live music. The pre-party begins at 6 p.m. with the main event starting at 7 p.m.

Casa Nueva, located at 6 W. State St., is hosting a Van Morrison tribute show at 7 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 9

The OU Alumni Homecoming Awards are held at 6 p.m. in Templeton-Blackburn Memorial Auditorium, located at 33 University Terrace. Doors open at 5 p.m. and light refreshments will be served.

Admission: Free

The Center for International Studies and College of Arts and Sciences are hosting a Global Dance Night, featuring music from around the world. Beginning at 7 p.m., the dance will be hosted at the Athens Armory, located at 1 Armory St. The event is in celebration of the relaunch of the OU Global Leadership Center. 

Admission: $20; tickets available online

Saturday, Oct. 10

The OU Homecoming Parade kicks off at 10 a.m., starting on Union Street, ending at the intersection of University Terrace and Park Place. The parade features exciting floats, the Marching 110 and an appearance by the Alumni Band.

Admission: Free 

The Alumni Association hosts a family-friendly party at the Ping Recreation Center Lawn, located at 82 S. Green Dr., from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be face painting, music and more.

Admission: Free for ages 9 and under, $15 for ages 10 and older; tickets available online.

The Bobcats face Central Michigan University in football at Peden Stadium, 200 Richland Ave., at 3:30 p.m. Students are encouraged to wear white, while general fans are instructed to wear green. 

Admission: Free for students, $25-$35 otherwise

Sunday, Oct. 11

The Athena Cinema, located at 20 S. Court St., hosts a screening of “American Fiction,” the Oscar-winning adaptation of Percival Everett’s critically acclaimed novel in honor of his visit. The screening begins at 3 p.m. 

Admission: Free, tickets required, available online

The Chris Monday Art Gallery opening reception will be held from 4-6 p.m. at Casa Nueva. The event will feature music by Charlie Touvell. The gallery is on display until Nov. 2.

Monday, Oct. 12

Ohio University Libraries welcomes award-winning author Percival Everett to discuss “James,” his acclaimed reimagining of Mark Twain’s “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” The event will be in Morton Hall, Room 201, at 7 p.m.
