Ohio dropped its first game of a weekend set with heated rivals Penn State 7-1 at the Penn State Ice Pavilion Friday night. The six-goal losing margin was the worst for the Bobcats in the five seasons.

The Icers struck first just 17 seconds into the game when Eric Steinhour put the puck past a surprised Fedor Dushkin to set the tone for the rest of the game.

After a Bobcat bench minor for too many men on the ice, Penn State (4-0-0) added another on the power play at the 12:45 mark from freshman Jacob Friedman, the first goal of his collegiate career.

The Icers’ Forrest Dell, another freshman, made it 3-0 with a goal at 17:02 to finish off a period in which Penn State outshot the Ohio 18-9.

It was much of the same in the second period, when Tommy Olcyzk scored on a nice feed from Michael Longo behind the net to make it 4-0 at 7:52. The Icers made it five when Friedman got his second power play goal of the game at 19:05 with Craig Myeroff in the box.

Penn State added two more from Steinhour and George Saad just 16 seconds apart in the third to make it a 7-0 game.

The Bobcats lone goal came with just two minutes remaining in the third, when Michael Schultz grabbed his team-leading 10th of the season with a bank-handed shot over Icer goalie Matt Madrazo’s shoulder to end the shutout bid. Myeroff and Jake Warner had the assists on the consolation goal.

Overall, the Icers outshot Ohio 60 to 24 in the game.

The Bobcats will have a chance for some redemption when they take on the Icers again Saturday afternoon, with faceoff set for 3:30.
