Defensive backfield loses depth

When Ohio and Penn State meet in Beaver Stadium Saturday, notable players on both sides will not be in action for differing reasons.

Former Penn State running back Silas Redd transferred to USC amid the whirlwind surrounding the Nittany Lions football program.

The Bobcats lost defensive backfield stalwarts Travis Carrie and Xavier Hughes. Carrie sustained a shoulder injury earlier in camp and will be sidelined for the rest of the season with an upcoming surgery scheduled.

Hughes was relegated to the scout team earlier today for violating team rules relating to off the field issues.

These loses obviously will force other players to fill the void.

“They are two key guys, we thought we were going to have coming into the season but it just gives the young guys opportunity to step up,” redshirt sophomore safety Josh Kristoff said. “We might not be as deep but we still have a lot of good players in the secondary.”

When players not in the roles they are accustomed to it might throw the off the overall cohesiveness of the group. Defensive backs coach Fred Reed said the with the players filling new roles the unit needs to be on the same page.”

“We have to make sure our guys understand the basis of what we are doing. We want to work on us first … making sure that we are communicating on defense so we won’t give up big plays,” Reed said. “I think we will be okay, but it’s about us and what we do.”

Uniform Combinations

After the excitement that ensued after the reveal of the black jerseys supplied by Russell Athletic, there was talk of a new combination set to be revealed when the team suits up against Penn State.

The suspense quickly subsided when Ohio equipment personnel posted photos of the Bobcats new green helmets with a white “OHIO” decal on both sides and a white stripe down the middle of the helmet.

The uniform combinations will be complete with the Bobcat’s away white jersey and green pants.

Brazill survives first round of cuts

Monday was the day National Football League teams trimmed training camp rosters down to 75 players.

Making the cut was former Ohio wide receiver LaVon Brazill, a seventh round pick of the Indianapolis Colts.

Friday is the next round of cuts when the rosters have to be trimmed to 53 players.
