The Toledo Bubble Buster Invitational kicked off Friday night, marking the beginning of a competitive season for the Bobcats.

The women’s cross country team finished ninth overall in the 4-kilometer race with 220 points. Juli Accurso led the squad with a third place finish in a time of 13 minutes, 20 seconds.

“Juli had a great performance and I feel the teams as a whole had a pretty solid finish.” My athletes really stepped up,” Ohio coach Clay Calkins said.

This weekend’s action provided both Bobcat squads a forum for runner to show promise. Freshmen Jarrod Genther and Wes Cochran guided the team to a sixth place finish.

“Sitting Tyler Ames Friday for an injury allowed Jarrod and Wes to be real impact performers for us,” Calkins said. “Melissa Thompson also stepped up and did a great job.”

Calkins said he believes his teams might have been able to even finish two or three spots higher in the meet.

With a schedule consisting of no down meets, the Bobcat running season will prepare them for the competition they will face the rest of the season.

“The Toledo Bubble Buster set us up well to deal with the Mid-American Conference competition. Notre Dame will be nothing less.”
