After leading his team to a 27-4 record and Mid-American Conference regular season and post-season titles, coach Ryan Theis was named the 2013 MAC coach of the year Wednesday.
This marks the sixth time an Ohio coach has received the award, along with the second time Theis has received the honors. He also received the award following the 2009 season, where he led the Bobcats to a 27-7 record and MAC regular season and post-season titles.
Theis led Ohio to Oregon Classic and WKU Invitational Tournament victories while defeating two teams in the top 25 during the team’s 10-2 record in non-conference play. During the MAC schedule he steered Ohio to a 14-2 record, where the Bobcats finished in the top three in all seven statistical categories during conference matches.
Theis guided the Bobcats to four first-team All-MAC selections and one freshman All-MAC selection, including the 2013 MAC Player of the Year and Setter of the Year, Abby Gilleland. These four first-team selections are the most on one Ohio team since Theis’ last coach of the year season in 2009.
Now in his sixth season with Ohio, Theis has compiled a 144-52 (.735) overall record, including a 79-17 (.823) record in MAC play. He is currently tied with Geoff Carlson (2003-07) for first all-time in program history in total overall victories at 144.
