Ohio announced the signing of three players for the 2014 freshman recruiting class Wednesday. The group of three includes Danielle Cabel, Jamie Kosiorek and Kathryn Nelson.
Cabel, a 6-foot-2-inch outside hitter, is a senior at Davenport Assumption High School in Bettendorf, Iowa. Besides playing volleyball for four years she she also lettered in track and field (three years) and basketball (two years).
The two-time first team all-conference selection helped lead the Knights to a conference championship in 2011 and competed in the Iowa State Volleyball Championship at both 3A and 4A levels in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Cabel was also named to the all-state first team by the Iowa Coaches Association and was named first-team all-metro area in 2012.
Cabel holds the Davenport Assumption High School all-time record for career kills and blocks, along with single-season kills. She was also selected to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Senior All-Star Classic following her final season.
She also played for Platform Elite Volleyball Club and Fusion Volleyball Club during her high-school career.
“Danielle is a physical presence. She is the in process of learning the right side position, and I can see her scoring a lot of points at Ohio on the right,” coach Ryan Theis said. “She is extremely driven and passionate about becoming a great volleyball player and we believe that will happen for her here.”
Kosiorek was a four-year player at Kenston High School in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. The 6-foot outside hitter led the Bombers to four conference championships and a berth in the Ohio Final Four during her junior campaign. She served as the team’s captain for three seasons (sophomore-senior).
Kosiorek was an all-state first-team selection as a senior and received second-team all-state honors as a junior. During her career she was a received all-conference honors four times and all-district three times. In her last three seasons she was the Chagrin Valley Conference MVP.
Kosiorek led her club team to a runner-up finish at then AAU Nationals as a freshman and junior, as well as the USAV Nationals Open as a senior. She is a two-time USAV National All-American and is No. 91 in the country in PrepVolleyball.com's Senior Aces List.
“Jaime is one of the most dynamic players we have ever recruited. She reminds me of (former Ohio outside hitter) Sue Jacobi with her foot-speed and ability to hit quick tempo (plays) as an outside hitter,” Theis said. “She has had a sensational high school and club volleyball career and will have a great career here at Ohio.”
Nelson, a 6-foot-4-inch middle blocker from Regina, Saskatchewan, was four-year letter winner at Michael Riffel High School, who also lettered in basketball during her freshman campaign.
As a member of Regina Volleyball Club for five-years, Nelson was named the MVP of RVC last season and won gold at the Saskatchewan Beach Provincials in 2012.
Nelson was awarded with SVA Provincial All-Star honors in 2012 and was selected to the 16-and-under Female Athlete of the Year by the Saskatchewan Volleyball Association.
“Katie has volleyball in her blood. Her mom, dad, step-mom and sister are all volleyball, all the time,” Theis said. “Katie is one of the biggest, most physical kids we have gotten in the middle. She reminds me of (former Ohio middle blocker) Lexie Hartnett. Once she catches up to the speed of our game, she is going to make us extremely physical at the net.”
