Men's Golf: 'Cats rebound from rough start to finish 7th

Ohio has proved in the final rounds of its tournaments that it can compete at a high level.

On the other hand, the Bobcats have also shown how much starting out slow hurts their final score.

For the second straight tournament, the Bobcats lagged in the first round, but came on strong in the final rounds of the Fossum Invitational. This time, a plus-39 325 hindered Ohio in their first round, putting them in 10th place.

It just took us a little of time to get used to the course

coach Bob Cooley said. The poor weather also hurt our game immensely.

Ohio was able to come back on Sunday and fire a 300 for the second round and a 148 for the rain-shortened nine-hole final round. The Bobcats' second-round score was the sixth-best score, while their final round score was the fourth highest. The play in the final day moved Ohio from 10th to seventh in the final standings.

The first day was definitely bad with us not knowing the course well junior Chad Warmbein said. But I think we're ready to go for next week.

Warmbein was the top finisher for Ohio with his 19th-place finish, his third straight top-20 finish.

I think I've been doing great with all aspects of my game lately except maybe my short game

Warmbein said. It could be improved

but I've been able to be consistent with everything else.

Cooley was hoping to narrow the lineup down for the Mid-American Conference Championships next week.

Sophomore Chuck Nettles, who golfed individually for Ohio in the tournament, did the best of the three Cooley said were competing for the final tournament spot, finishing in 27th with his 14-over par performance.

Competing for that last spot is an incentive for me to play better

Nettles said. We're all pushing each other and rooting for each other and just happy to be competing for those spots.

With the MAC Championships next weekend, this was Ohio's final tournament to fix up things before they compete for the conference title.

We keep getting better

but we have to eliminate those bad early rounds

Cooley said.We dig ourselves in these holes and need to play better from the first hole.
