Been there drank that: Attention all coffee addicts

Feeling Like Some Coffee

When you wake up in the morning or in the afternoon - no judgment here - a series of thoughts run through your mind:

I'm cold ... I have to pee ... I hate waking up ... I need caffeine ... What is that smell? ... Why did I sign up for this class? ... If that smell is me

do I need to shower? ... I hate waking up.

Wake Up in the Morning Feeling Like Some Coffee

When you wake up in the morning or in the afternoon - no judgment here - a series of thoughts run through your mind:

I'm cold ... I have to pee ... I hate waking up ... I need caffeine ... What is that smell? ... Why did I sign up for this class? ... If that smell is me

do I need to shower? ... I hate waking up.

Ok, maybe it isn't always in that order, but that is the general thought process as soon as you roll out of bed. And the need for caffeine is a top priority as you get ready to face the day.

As we all know, caffeine comes in many different shapes and sizes, some safer than others, and some probably more legal than others. The majority of college students get their caffeine fix from coffee and espresso. Coffee is like North Face, Sperrys, all Apple products and giant Vera Bradley bags: As soon as you come to college, it becomes really cool and helps you express your individuality. Students start the day with personal coffee makers and spend money uptown on specialty drinks at one or more of the numerous coffee shops to get that caffeine jolt.

The price of the coffee bean is at a 12-year high, which has forced many stores to increase prices. However, this increase isn't really stopping students from gulping down drinks, because let's face it - we are all addicted to caffeine. Some more than others. You know who you are. So we buy it, even if a caramel macchiato costs just as much as a pack of cigarettes, without even glancing at the receipt. Pick your poison, I guess. Or pick both. Whatever gets you through the day, man.

In order to help you decide the best place to refuel and make it through that boring 8 a.m. lecture class, I'm going to take a walk through the world of Athens coffee shops. There are a lot of different shops with a lot of different drinks and a lot of different atmospheres. I'm going to find out what's good, what's cool, what's hot, what's blended and what's cheap. And let's be real, since pumpkin spice returned to the menu with fall weather, we are all buying more lattes these days, anyway.
