Ohio University recently reported that the Urban Scholars Program received $850,000 from alumnus James Bartholomew's estate. Although I do not directly benefit from the Urban Scholars program, the donation is great news to me. More alumni should follow his lead and donate to the scholarship. Why? Because I am certain that when minorities are given scholarships, we all benefit.
Among other things, substandard conditions plague inner cities where the majority of minorities live; therefore, minorities have a smaller likelihood of finishing high school or going to college. This is partly because they simply can't afford it. More scholarships mean that more people will have the chance to gain an education that would not have been possible otherwise. The-
