Your Turn: Delta Zeta experience respectable

Freshman year, I became a member of Delta Zeta by going through formal recruitment. After that day, the girls in your pledge class start new member education, where every member must learn about her sorority in and out. During this time, I was never subjected to having my fat circled, my breast size analyzed or been challenged to a puking contest. I can go further to say that the Delta Zeta sorority stands strong by a Zero Tolerance Hazing Policy that every sorority must abide by. Not only was I treated with respect, but I was able to become involved in several philanthropic activities. Delta Zeta's main goal was to support the hearing- and speech-impaired. The Ohio University chapter, along with Delta Zetas nationwide, raise money for organizations such as Sound Beginnings, which make mothers aware of the need for newborn hearing tests and also Gallaudet University, the only four-year school to offer an education solely for the deaf.

I am no longer in the sorority because of my falling in love with the sport of rowing and just not having time, but I would like to stress as a non-greek member on campus that the girls that I shared a great deal of time with were not easy DZ's and in no way wanted to lower my self-esteem. I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion; just try to base that opinion on issues you have actually experienced.
