This letter pertains to the Student Senate elections, and more particularly a presidential candidate who has given women around this campus cause for alarm.
I have looked at the FACE and RSVP platforms extensively. I am an interested student who desires to vote for the Student Senate party that best represents me.
Both platforms feature a variety of opinions on issues that are important to students (and some that are not so important).
FACE’s actions at Palmerfest have me worried that they are not serious about representing the students of this university.
Presidential candidate Matthew Wallace has posted on Facebook (or been tagged in) a number of photos that are extremely disrespectful to the female population of Ohio University.
One features a photo of him with another man sporting a sign that says, “free moustache rides.”
A second picture Wallace has posted features him signing a girl’s bare backside with an open beer in front of him while wearing his FACE shirt.
Is this really the kind of chauvinistic behavior we desire in our Student Senate president?
Don’t get me wrong; I like to have a good time. I went to Palmerfest and let loose a little. I’m not running for office and I still showed more restraint than members of the FACE ticket.
One picture even showed a man wearing a FACE shirt while he was urinating on a fence! It is not difficult to act responsibly in a public setting, nor is it difficult to behave in a socially responsible way.
I want our Student Senate to consist of respectable individuals with a reputation for professionalism.
I am not aware if the RSVP presidential candidate was guilty of similar transgressions, but at least he was responsible enough to keep it off Facebook.
