Student Senate is moving today’s meeting a little closer to home for many of Ohio University’s undergraduate students.
Senate is hosting a “Destination General Body” meeting at 7:15 tonight in the first-floor library of Jefferson Hall on East Green. The meeting will focus on the transition from quarters to semesters, which start with the 2012-13 school year.
“We’re hoping to get a good crowd of undergraduates and students who live on East Green to attend,” Senate President Kyle Triplett said.
Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit will attend the meeting along with Jeff Giesey, co-director of the Q2S transition, and David Descutner, dean of the University College, to answer students' questions about the transition and be the “in-house experts” on the subject, Triplett said.
The meeting also will include a presentation from Sarah Williams, Arts and Sciences senator and Diversity Affairs Committee chairwoman. Williams will update senate on a poster campaign launched by Students Teaching about Racism in Society, an organization that raises awareness by sparking conversation among students about racism and discrimination.
The posters read: “We’re a culture, not a costume. This is not who I am, and this is not okay.” Each one displays a student holding up a picture of a stereotypical Halloween costume based on his or her race.
The posters, which began as another one of STARS’ quarterly events, went viral on the Web after Williams, the president of STARS, put them on her personal Tumblr blog last week, she said.
“I’m excited that this is creating a discussion,” Williams said. “The point is people are talking; they are challenging themselves and what they believe in. Our purpose was to facilitate a discussion, and it succeeded — and on a national level."
