Stimulus provides money for emergency agencies

Athens County agencies providing emergency food and housing assistance can apply for an additional $21,000 in grants made possible by federal stimulus money.

The American Recovery Act grants will supplement the $49,000 in federal money that has already been dispersed to agencies like Good Works, My Sister's Place, the Southeast Ohio Regional Food Center and the Salvation Army.

The grant guidelines dictate the money should be available to other agencies as well, said Pam Harvey, executive director of United Appeal for Athens County. Existing programs and agencies have until May 21 to apply. Interested parties can e-mail giving@unitedappeal.org

for an application.

The board of directors for United Appeal has already received requests from food pantries and community centers that provide mass meals, Harvey said.

We're grateful to the members of Congress and the U.S. senators who helped pass this

she said. It's going to go to good use in Athens County.
